Evolution of Relationships

An important thing to remember when understanding the changes in relationships during the 1960s is how relationships changed not only sexually, but within marriages.

Professor Kinsey was a scientist who changed the way society thought about sex. Before Kinsey sex was never spoken about and because of this young people knew little to nothing about sex. If youths decided to ask their parents about sexual relationships they would be let down for even parents knew little to nothing about sexual intercourse. In the Kinsey report documentary we watch how even adults had little knowledge about sexual relationships. Kinsey speaks about his struggles with sexual relationships in his own life with other women. Kinsey was the first to open this conversation to the public and this brought a lot of controversy, but also peaked the interest of many.  A particularly interesting part about this documentary was learning about just how dangerous Kinsey’s work was. Dangerous in that during this time sex was not talked about and because he was bringing awareness to this topic he was receiving hatred from those who did not believe it should be discussed. In the documentary John Gagnon explains the backlash explaining “You couldn’t study sex without taking a risk, to ask people about their sex lives as an interviewer, is risky. To go to Times Square to interview husslers is risky, to rent hotels and have people come and talk to you, risky, there was nothing and anything he did that was not risk” (49:21- 49:38)
